Interviews with Americas top cardiovascular surgeons and physicians also enhance this captivating chronicle of the field. This is a rich source for all who are interested in cardiovascular medicine, and also serves as a permanent clinical reference for physicians who treat adult and pediatric cardiology patients. This is the 19th volume in the series in which about 700 articles are reviewed, providing an overview of developments in cardiovascular medicine in the period from November, 1997 to October, 1998. The intent is to provide a collection of summaries of important papers in cardiology taken from the key journals in the field. In an era when no practitioner can hope to keep up with current material and trends in cardiology, this book provides invaluable assistance. The text is designed to provide an overview of important cardiovascular topics for that twelve-month period. The authors are all well known and highly credible. Each takes one or more of the big journals in cardiology to review. Most of the text is again devoted to an extensive coverage of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. There are also reviews in congestive heart failure and even some alternative medicine papers (such as green and black tea). Arrhythmias are covered, including atrial fibrillation and flutter as well as angioplasty and stent usage. The graphs and illustrations are black-and-white and taken from the original papers. Again, this year there are ten interviews with leaders of cardiology reprinted by Dr. Roberts from the American Journal of Cardiology. This book provides readers an opportunity to catch up on important papers that may have been overlooked. In addition to summaries of these papers, the authors offer editorial comment on some of the articles. This is a good source book with a very helpful index. Summarizes important developments in clinical cardiovascular medicine from November 1997 to December 1998. Culled from the literature of major medical journals reporting on cardiovascular medicine, this compilation of nearly 700 summaries is categorized by 10 areas, including congestive heart failure and transplantation. Prominent trends covered include interventional procedures used to treat coronary heart disease and peripheral atherosclerosis. Discussions range from the role of homocysteine, to surgical bypass procedures, antiplatelet therapies, and coronary stenting. Includes some 135 pages of in-depth interviews with 10 leaders of cardiovascular medicine and surgery.
