Functional Rehabilitation in Orthopaedics

This book shows the clinician how to apply the newest concepts of functional restoration, so successful in sports medicine and industrial medicine, to the average orthopaedic patient. Functional assessment, activity analysis, documentation, and the implementation of a functional rehabilitation program are included. This is an intriguing new book about the "hot" topic of functional rehabilitation. The book neatly outlines methods for performing orthopedic functional assessment and treatment and presents guidelines for working with special populations and pathologies. The purpose is to help clinicians rethink traditional orthopedic rehabilitation and to make functional rehabilitation a philosophy and initial goal for managing all patients. The author includes basic information about "closed chain" rehabilitation and movement science and gives clear descriptions of functional exercises and adaptive equipment. This book is timely because increasingly financial reimbursement for rehabilitation services is dependent on the clinician's ability to provide evidence that the services they provide are both effective and necessary in bringing about positive functional changes in patients. This book is written for physical and occupational therapists, but it is also suitable for athletic trainers and physical therapy assistants. Although the author does not appear to have advanced training or research experience in functional rehabilitation, she does include an excellent chapter by noted expert Beverly Biondi on lumbar functional stabilization programs. This book effectively uses pictures, tables, photos, and charts to get important points across. The photos of adaptive equipment and the tables outlining functional programs are especially instructional. It is bothersome however, that the same models are used repeatedly throughout the book. This is a useful book for entry-level clinicians. The author successfully packages useful clinical information about functional rehabilitation and brings together theoreticalideas with practical guidelines for successfully incorporating functional rehabilitation into the therapeutic intervention of patients. Provides rehabilitation specialists with a logical treatment plan to restore function in both ordinary patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction and other patient populations. This treatment plan involves the combined use of a correctional program and actual or modified functional activities. When available, the actual motions and muscles needed to perform different functional activities are included, so that readers understand which structures are being stressed during various functional tasks. The author also recommends adjustments to the program that should be considered for patients with specific musculoskeletal injuries. Goldstein, Trudy Sandler, PTA physical therapist from California, Beverly Biondi, wrote one chapter on the lumbar spine.
