Atlas of Oral Implantology

This book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations. This encyclopedic effort covers a decade of developments since the first edition. All 29 chapters are richly illustrated and supported. The purpose is to contribute to the comprehension, capabilities, and skills of readers and to the improvement of the health, well being, and quality of life of patients. Virtually all dentists wishing to bring implant dentistry into the new millenium will gain from this book. Postgraduate residents in fields related to implant dentistry will learn immensely by consulting this text. This book remains among the very few to provide dental professionals with an extensive review of varied dental implant systems available. Many root form endosseous dental implant systems are reviewed (Nobel Biocare, Sulzer-Calcitek, Paragon, Steri-Oss, Lifecore Biomedical, Straumann-iti, Biomorizons Maestro System, Psicon, Park Dental Startanius, Oratronics Spiral, Omni-R, Kyocera Bioceram, Innova Endopre Implant, Friatee/Frialit, Sargon, Astra Tech Dental Implant, Osteored Mextrac Fixture) as well as alternative implant systems (Blade & Plate-Form, Rames Frame & Blade, Subperiosteal implants, Intramorcosal inserts, Endodontic Stabilizers, Transosteal implants, Mince, and other mini-implants). Various surgical approaches covering implants, placement, and regenerative procedures are presented. A multitude of restorative concepts for the different implant systems are also covered. In a field that so dramatically influenced and changed our ability to help our edentulous patients, this book brings contemporary material to light of new and not-so-new concepts. Probing in historical and current controversies that have shaped the development of the fast-paced implant dentistry, the author expertly steers the reader through 50 years of pioneering and continuing research in implant dentistry, which can only better the dental professionals that will read this book. Let me borrow this saying (I have unfortunately forgotten the origin) which the author must have understood decades ago: "It is what we think we know that prevents us from learning." This atlas covers patient and implant selection, prosthetic options, specific surgical procedures for numerous brands of implants, and evaluation and treatment of complications. The purpose is to provide the reader a hands-on manual and reference for the numerous implant systems available. The authors should be commended for the extent of information discussed. Implant systems covered are endosseous (i.e., root form, plate, blade, subperiosteal) intramucosal, endodontic, and transosteal. Bone grafting and hard tissue replacements are discussed. Although no specific audience is mentioned, this atlas would be well suited for any practitioner or resident wishing a comprehensive guide to multiple implant systems. The authors are unknown to me but are postgraduate-educated in implantology and are believed to be credible authorities. The atlas has numerous black-and-white and color photographs. These along with line drawings and radiographs provide an excellent complement to the text. The overall appearance is pleasing and appropriate. This atlas provides a glossary of terms used in the text. This atlas is a compilation of information on various implant types and multiple implant systems. It is quite thorough and provides text on instrumentation and surgical steps for every major implant system. I recommend this book to the intended audience. A manual on how to choose patients, evaluate host sites, select implant types (not specific proprietary products, however), place them step-by-step, observe them, diagnose incipient problems, institute remedial techniques, perform a wide variety of restorative modalities, and maintain and follow patients during the postoperative period. In addition to its 24 chapters, the Atlas contains ten appendices: past medical and dental history, laboratory values, CAD-CAM computed tomography, treatment of metals, implant surgery consent form, postoperative guidelines for the surgeon, postoperative instructions for the patient, recommended diet following implant surgery, implant patient follow-up form, and where to find products mention in the volume. 9.25x12.25" Cranin, A.
