Practical Procedures in Anesthesia and Critical Care

This book presents the authors' preferred techniques for procedures commonly performed in a variety of intensive care settings. The chapters are organized by organ system: cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urologic, CNS, and peripheral nervous system. This book provides medical trainees and other health professionals with a standard technique for many invasive procedures. The authors have chosen approaches that they propose reflect a national consensus among specialists. To enhance this book's utility as a rapidly accessible reference, the important indications, contraindications, required equipment, and special caveats were organized into separate lists and placed adjacent to the text. It is intended for graduate medical residents, medical students, nurses, paramedics and, on occasion, experienced physicians. This is an entry-level text describing a variety of invasive procedures. Residents and medical students will accrue the greatest benefit. Experienced clinicians will generally find it of limited value, except as a lecture resource. The lists are provided to highlight clinical considerations and are not comprehensive, but they are adequate for the bulk of the intended audience. For instance, in the section on the fiberoptic intubation of the anesthetized patient, there is no concern or relative contraindication listed regarding the patient with a recognized difficult airway being electively anesthetized before securing the airway. The illustrations suffer from simplicity to the degree that recommended supplies cannot be identified from the drawings. This book is clearly written and intelligently organized. It is particularly well suited for use by junior residents andmedical and nursing students as a reference. Libraries of nursing schools, medical schools, and community hospitals should own a copy. Community hospitals should keep this book on nursing units where invasive procedures are frequently performed. It is difficult to recommend it to experienced clinicians for their own library. Baskett, Peter J.F., BA, MB, BCh (Frenchay Hospital, Bristol); Dow, Alasdair, MB, ChB, MRCP (Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital); Nolan, Jerry, MB, ChB, FRCA (Royal United Hospital, Bath); Maull, Kimball, MD
