Birth Control Vaccines (Medical Intelligence Unit)

This book, the first edition of a treatise on birth control vaccines, is a compilation by multiple authors of the most recent studies concerning nonhormonal methods of contraception. The purpose is to bring together in one publication the latest work in the field of immunologic contraception. The scope of the book limits its usefulness to the few researchers interested and actively working in the fields of immunology and reproductive controls. The objectives are well met. This book is written for those researchers interested in the fields of nonhormonal and immunologic fertility control. It may also be of interest to those researchers working in cell biology. The editors and contributors are certainly credible. The illustrations are extremely well done and very appropriate. The majority of references are from works published within the last five years. The table of contents and index are adequate. The overall appearance of the text is excellent. This is an extremely valuable collected reference for those working in the area of fertility control. This book enjoys a limited usefulness in that it is not suitable for the general medical population. However, for those on the cutting edge of reproductive immunology, it is a valuable compilation of the most recent work. It is an excellent reference. For researchers and clinicians, explores the regulation of fertility with vaccines that act by mobilizing internal processes within the body, and so do not entail the continuous pharmacological intake of synthetic compounds. The idea of using vaccines against specifically targeted antigens in the body rather than against external pathogens is innovate and perhaps peculiar, but has been shown safe for several vaccines that have reached clinical trials or are in use for animals. Among the topics are sperm and egg antigens, follicle-stimulating hormone, riboflavin carrier proteins, microsphere delivery systems, local cell mediated immunity, and prospects for oral vaccines. Talwar, G. P. (National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi); Raghupathy, Raj (Kuwait Univ)The contributors represent the specialties of reproductive biology, molecular endocrinology, obstetrics/gynecology, immunology, and pathology. Most are from academic institutions in India, with others from the U.S. Institutions prominently represented include Harvard, Indian Institute of Science, and National Institute of Immunology in New Delhi.
