Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Neurology: An Evidence-based Approach to Clinical Practice

Complementary and alternative therapies can play a significant role in the management of many neurological disorders. Since these therapies often are used together with conventional treatments, it is important for physicians and other health care providers to understand their basis and appreciate when the different techniques can benefit the patient. This book takes a rigorous scientific approach to the evaluation of complementary and alternative therapies. The contents are divided into two main sections: an evaluation of the therapeutic modalities and a disease-based review of the evidence for each therapy. Only those therapies where a sufficient evidence-base exists have been covered. The book will be of interest to a wide range of health care workers including neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, nurses and therapists as well as practitioners of complementary and alternative medicine working with patients with neurological diseases.

For any health-care provider who sees people with neurological diseases, researchers and practitioners describe complementary therapies in a rigorous enough manner to satisfy conventionally trained physicians, including neurologists. Some outline a number of the therapies, including botanicals, chiropractice, massage, acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, ayurvedic medicine, and religious involvement. Others start at the other end, describing the use of complementary therapies in such neurological conditions as headache, epilepsy, dementia, peripheral neuropathy, insomnia, snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, and families of children with disabilities.
