Sports Medicine: Problems and Practical Management

A clearly structured, concise guide to the scientific basis, diagnosis and treatment of sports injury. This is a wonderfully illustrated paperback that concisely covers a variety of sports injuries. It is intended to provide not only a comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide to the diagnosis and management of sports injuries, but also to represent the standards of care developed for the treatment of athletes for the year 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. It is difficult to meet the editors' objectives in this brief format with such scant use of current references. However, they do manage to provide a succinct, practical guide in the essentials of medical care for athletes by relying on their vast experience in the field of sports medicine. The book is intended for physicians, orthopedic surgeons, general practitioners, and healthcare professionals with an interest in sports medicine and injury. In my judgment, this book targets healthcare providers who desire a concise text with which to enhance their knowledge of the essentials of sports medicine injuries, diagnosis, guidelines, and management. Although purportedly comprehensive, this text is inadequate for more experienced professionals requiring in-depth coverage of specific sports medicine topics. This text successfully highlights the essentials of sports medicine with the use of superior quality black-and-white graphics. These informative images are one of the book's greatest strengths and range from superb diagrams, tables, and illustrations of physical exam maneuvers to radiographs and intraoperative findings. Although it does not quite live up to a "comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide," this book concisely and very effectively relays the fundamentals of sports medicine through well covered topics and uniqueillustrations. This book is an easy to read text that covers common injuries in popular sports. Thus, it succeeds in providing an excellent grounding in the current essentials in diagnosis and treatment of sports medicine injuries. Australian practitioners share the insights of their experience with colleagues and students in a practical guide with few specific references but a list of recommended reading. They cover general aspects such as history, basic science, and the acute management of sick and injured athletes; the head, eye, hand and wrist, gut and urinary tract, and other regions of the body; and special circumstances, among them women, child, older, and disabled athletes and psychiatry. Distributed in the US by Oxford University Press. . Sherry, Eugene, MD, MPH, FRACS (Univ of Sydney); Bokor, Des J., MB, BS (Hons), FRACS, FAOrthA (Western Sydney Orthopaedic Associates)The contributors represent the specialties of orthopedics, psychiatry, and sports medicine. Most come from universities and hospitals in Australia, including Univ of Sydney Medical School and Nepean Hospital.
