The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Beginning in 1985, an international meeting on computer assisted radiology (CAR) has been held in Berlin every two years under the sponsorship of the International Symposium on Computer and Communications Systems for Image Guided Diagnostics and Therapy. The papers presented at the CAR 1995 meeting constitute the material in this book. The CAR meetings, and therefore these proceedings, are intended to provide a single comprehensive focus for digital and computer tools for imaging associated with medical diagnosis and therapy. The frontiers of these technologies are advancing rapidly in laboratories around the world, and this objective is very worthwhile. With the more than 300 papers in this volume, all devoted to state-of-the-art technologies, the intended focus of the program committee and editors has been achieved. Authors of the papers constitute many, perhaps most, of the leading authorities on research issues associated with digital and computer imaging tools applied to medicine. The editors are well-known researchers, and the first editor is the founder of the CAR effort. The book will be of interest to everyone who has a need to know, or an interest in, state-of-the-art imaging techniques applied to medicine. This audience will include physicists, electrical and biomedical engineers, and physicians. The book does not contain an abundance of illustrations, but those present are of satisfactory quality. More illustrations might have been useful, but they would have increased the cost. Almost every paper has accompanying references, and the table of contents lists every paper under various headings. There is no index, but there is a glossary of important words and phrases, and analphabetized list of authors. One important feature of the book is its currency; this book contains papers delivered in Berlin in June 1995. This book is a very valuable reference for anyone interested in the moving frontiers of research in digital and computer-assisted imaging. I have a set of proceedings for earlier symposia, and I refer to them often when I need to know the current status of research in a particular area of medical imaging. The present volume will complement and update the earlier proceedings nicely. The book is a very handy way to initiate a search into the literature related to a particular technology. Every medical library should acquire a copy of the book, as should individuals who have reason to reference the imaging literature frequently.
