Drug Toxicity in Embryonic Development I: Advances in Understanding Mechanisms of Birth Defects: Morphogenesis and Processes at Risk, Vol. 124

This is a new edition of an edited book in the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology series. In a two-part edition, the first book teaches the reader about issues in developmental biology of higher vertebrates and recent perturbing experiments that elucidate the molecular mechanisms of development. This book complements the second book in the set, which extends the teaching on molecular mechanisms of development and describes how drugs and toxins perturb developmental mechanisms to produce teratogenic effects. The book is aimed at early post-doctoral physicians and post docs, but would be informative for advanced graduate students and those scientists wishing an overview of molecular teratology. The positive features of the book are its fine group of authors, detailed table of contents, accurate references, and instructive diagrams. Although recommended for purchase, this book could use more diagrams and more up-to-date references. Kavlock, Robert J., PhD (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency); Daston, George P., PhD (Proctor and Gamble)The contributors represent the specialties of medical genetics, molecular biology, and toxicology. Most are from universities, research institutes, and pharmaceutical companies in five countries, including the U.K., the U.S., and Germany. Institutions prominently represented include UNC-Chapel Hill, Salk Institute, and Univ of Toronto.
