Peptides in Oncology 3: Somatostatin and LH-RH Analogues, Vol. 153

This volume presents the state of the art in the use of somatostatin and LH-RH analogues in neoplastic diseases. It describes their mechanisms of action and the present clinical relevance of these approaches in cancer treatment, including structural and functional aspects. Each chapter is prepared by an expert active in the experimental and/or clinical field, so that the book comprises the most recent information on the topic. In this book the editors provide results of clinical trials using these peptides, with scientific rational. Current knowledge of these peptides as diagnostic tools and treatment modalities -- as well as future considerations -- is presented by experts in the field. The purpose is to review and update the mechanisms of action of somatostatin and LH-RH analogues in oncology. These peptides are being used more extensively in cancer diagnosis and treatment due to our improved understanding of their mechanism. A review of our current knowledge is certainly worthwhile. This book is a summary of the clinical trials which support the use of these peptides. The editors present recent advances in the mechanisms and provide insight into future applications. This book is written for cancer researchers and clinicians. It is appropriate for this audience as basic and clinical data is provided to support the use and development of these peptides in cancer treatment. The editors and contributors are experts in the field with extensive experience in the use of these drugs. In four chapters contributors explore the use of somatostatin analogues in the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. Clinical studies of radiolabeled somatostatin analogues are presented. The clinical implications of the recently identified family members of the somatostatin receptors are explored. Furthermore, the use of somatostatin analogues in a variety of carcinomas are reported. In three chapters contributors address our current knowledge of LH-RH analogues in the treatment of breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. The mechanism of their action is clearly elucidated in detailed diagrams. The current results and ongoingstudies are presented in comprehensive tables. Each chapter is easy to read and follow, with subtitles and thorough references. Interesting, up-to-date basic science is presented and correlated with clinical studies in well organized chapters. Readers can access appropriate background information and find ideas for future uses of these and similar compounds. Hoffken, Klaus (Friedrich-Schiller Univ of Jena); Kath, Roland (Friedrich-Schiller Univ of Jena)
